Smooth Ambler Big Level (B-/C+)

Wheated Bourbon – First try – holy cow. The initial smell is all alcohol. This is 100 proof and it didn’t even try to hide it. No wheat on first taste, only burning. Subtle wheat on second taste, but the rye and burning really come into their own. There are no real smells besides alcohol; at least it isn’t antiseptic smelling. Add some ice and the burn disappears and it’s replaced with the antiseptic flavor I was so missing. You’ll want some water on the side for this. It was awful – D.

Second Try a few months later – I know bottle don’t age, but something happened because it’s not as terrible. Like, surprisingly, I think I like it now. The wheat is well balanced with a very subtle corn base and some rye spice. This is really surprising. B.

I held off on reviewing the first try because it was so startlingly bad I poured it out. I’m going to combine both scores on this one. Because I can.
